Would You Like To Improve Your Sleeping Health?

How often does the stress of work, relationships, or personal goals keep you awake, staring at the ceiling, hoping for sleep to come? Do you lie in bed, unable to quiet a flood of intrusive thoughts, concerns, or negative emotions? Are you having problems falling asleep or sleeping soundly without waking too early or throughout the night?

Perhaps you eventually manage to get some rest, but it’s constantly interrupted by chronic pain, trouble breathing, or distressing dreams. On the other hand, you may be taking prescriptions or self-medicating in hopes of finding rest only to realize that healthy sleep doesn’t come in a bottle.

If you have trouble getting to bed or staying asleep, it can have a tremendous impact on your life. Insomnia can shorten your reaction time, impair your short-term memory, and leave you feeling exhausted throughout the day. As a result, you may be lacking focus at work or feeling like you aren’t really present in your relationships—or the world in general—anymore. You may be making more mistakes, having difficulty processing new information, or lacking the patience necessary to do your job or be an engaged parent.

Fortunately, treating insomnia can change your physical and mental well-being for the better. With my support, you can understand what is behind your sleep issues and develop healthy behaviors that will help you feel recharged and capable of navigating life with confidence and ease.

We live in a highly stimulating and competitive culture that conditions us to feel like we always have to be striving toward some end. The push to meet deadlines, lower the company overhead, get that next promotion, and accomplish personal goals puts tremendous pressure on us to always be “on.” So we go to bed wired and tired at the same time. Plus, our growing dependence on cell phones exposes us to a constant stream of texts, emails, and notifications that make clocking out of work a thing of the past. With so much going on, it’s understandable why it can be hard to shut down at the end of the day.

Personal factors also play a part in the health of our sleep patterns. Nicotine, alcohol, and caffeine use, as well as poor eating habits, can contribute to sleep disruption. Video games, streaming movies, and social media also distract us from mentally settling down and preparing our bodies and brains for sleep. Moreover, many people live in urban areas where light and noise pollution make it difficult to achieve quality sleep although they may technically get enough rest. Even the glow from an alarm clock or the incessant blinking of LED’s on electronic devices can make it difficult to rest soundly.

We often don’t give enough credit to the health of our sleep. But so much of who we are—how we think and feel and perform in the world—is dependent upon getting enough quality sleep. Fortunately, I can show you how to take care of your sleep health the way you would your physical health. In time, you can not only improve your sleep patterns but also overcome the underlying issues that were causing you distress in the first place.

Insomnia Treatment Can Help Heal The Root Of Your Sleep Disorder

Therapy gives you an effective and reliable way of dealing with the stressors that are disrupting your sleep patterns. Whether you are experiencing a sudden bout of insomnia or you have been dealing with a chronic issue for years, the very nature of the condition likely gives you a lot of spare time to think. Working with a therapist helps you use these musings as a gateway to greater self-awareness that can inform the treatment process. Once you understand and resolve the stressors and triggers that keep you awake, you can begin working on ways to improve your sleep health.

One of the most powerful aspects of insomnia treatment is simply having someone who will be present with you and listen to your story. So we’ll begin our work together by simply discussing how you feel, as well as the severity of your insomnia and how your life is currently being impacted by it. We’ll explore aspects of your upbringing, childhood relationships, or traumatic experiences that may be causing you stress. And I’ll look at your overall health and review any medications, activities, or habits that may also contribute to the problem.

Every person has an individualized need for therapy, which is why I offer several treatment options. One of the tools I use, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBTI), is one of the most effective strategies for treating sleep disorders. CBTI involves building skills, adopting healthy behaviors, and learning how to manage stress so you can soothe your mind and quiet the racing, worrisome thoughts keeping you up at night. Talk therapy is often very effective because it gives you access to a professional who can help translate and guide you through some of the more complicated thoughts and feelings that are sapping your energy and focus.

I offer meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises, as well as mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques to help you self-soothe and relax. And I can help you tune into your inherent strengths and teach you how to recognize and challenge problematic feelings before they evolve into negative behaviors or coping mechanisms.

I believe that you can achieve a good night’s rest without pharmaceutical intervention. However, if we find that deep-rooted, underlying emotional issues are complicating your situation, I can offer you alternative therapy options and holistic interventions, as well as guidance in choosing medication that is right for you.

There is no question that therapy works to reduce overall stress and anxiety levels, factors that are closely related to insomnia. But therapy can also provide you with deeper, more sustainable healing in the long run. Working together, we can resolve pain or injuries you’ve sustained in the past so that those memories no longer consume you in the present. In time, you can improve your sleep health and overall well-being so you can wake up rested and ready to take on life’s challenges.

Perhaps you are considering insomnia treatment but still have some concerns…

I worry I will be judged.

People are often the harshest judges of themselves, seeing fault where there is none. But there’s no need to blame yourself or fear the judgment of others. I have seen so much and do not condemn anyone for their needs, beliefs, or actions. I’m just here to listen and guide you. All I care about is helping you remove the obstacles holding you back so you can get the best night’s sleep possible.

I’m afraid of what change might look like.

As human beings, we naturally crave consistency and stability. So even if we are stuck in a bad place, it can feel like progress is a threat. But with your commitment to insomnia therapy, your work performance, relationships, and overall outlook on life can improve, almost overnight—no pun intended. By merely investing in what a better tomorrow could look like, you’ll give yourself the chance to be happier, healthier, and free from the wounds of the past.

Can I really afford sleep therapy?

Sleep disorders can often be confusing because getting a good night’s rest seems so natural that it feels like it should be an effortless endeavor. But there are many factors—not all of which are obvious—that can contribute to sleeplessness. Instead of blindly throwing money at the problem by taking potentially addictive medications, working with a sleep specialist enables you to get to the core of your condition. Plus, if you have out of network coverage, I can work with your insurance provider to get some, if not most, of the costs covered.
